Hosting Changes
I spent the weekend doing various sys-admin tasks in order to switch this domain, wingedpig.com and another domain of ours from Verio to our in house server. When I say in-house, I mean in-house. We upgraded our home DSL line to static IP addresses, and now we're hosting a couple of domains in house. It will end up saving us money, because while the upgraded DSL account costs more, I save by not paying Verio for two hosted accounts. And Verio wasn't doing a very good job anyways.
Actually, this is a good, cost-effective way to start an Internet-based business. Instead of paying a hosting company like Verio, run a machine (or two or twenty) from your house. As long as your bandwidth needs aren't greater than what a DSL or Cable Modem can provide, this is not a bad way to go. To name an example, this is what DayPop appears to be doing.
Even though the bubble has crashed, or maybe because of, it's a great time to start an Internet based business.
