Waiting for the Inevitable
So, when will it happen? We all know what's coming. Deep down in our subconscious, we know. Yes, I'm talking about the all-star musical tribute songs. When will this decade's 'We are the World' hit? Next week? Next month? It's only a matter of time. And you can't escape.
At least a couple of these beasts will appear soon, probably grouped by genre. The rock tribute song, the country tribute song, maybe even the rap tribute song. Lumbering out of hastily scheduled recording sessions like the giant stay-puff marshmellow man from Ghostbusters. And they will be at least as sickly sweet. Batten down the hatches, because there's no stopping them now.
And of course don't forget the anthems. These are pre-existing songs that will be corrupted into having new meanings. Don't think people aren't already singing 'Born in the USA' all over the place. We can only hope that the Backstreet Boys don't do a quick cover of it to capitalize on the current situation.
Watch out. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
